The space

A full floor, thirteen storeys up.

Hugh's Jazz Club takes the entire 13th floor of 73 Juta Street - a living tribute to Hugh "Bra Hugh" Masekela, built with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation. Deep-red velvet booths curve around brass table lamps; "Soundstop" acoustic glazing wraps the room in a 360-degree skyline while keeping the music exactly where it belongs - inside.

It is a room engineered around the music first. A built-in marble bar, in-house PA, parquet floors and warm low light make it as comfortable for a seated private dinner as it is for a launch, a screening or one of the venue's signature live jazz evenings. The lift opens straight onto the floor, so the whole space arrives as a single, exclusive room.

Perched on the 13th floor of 73 Juta Street, Hugh's Jazz Club is an intimate, elevated venue accessed exclusively by elevator. A built-in marble bar and floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of Johannesburg — the stage for private dinners, product and media launches, screenings, conferences and our signature weekly jazz evenings.

The Venue

A living tribute to Hugh “Bra Hugh” Masekela, created with the Hugh Masekela Heritage Foundation. Thirteen floors above the city, Hugh’s pairs world-class jazz with deep red velvet booths, soundproof glazing and sweeping skyline views - an intimate room built entirely around the music. A share of every ticket is reinvested into preserving Bra Hugh’s legacy.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Yes. Hugh's Jazz Club is available for exclusive private hire. Venue hire is R110,000 excluding VAT per day.
  • Venue hire includes: venue manager, bar staff, kitchen staff, security, cleaners, door and elevator hostesses, and the in-house PA system. Food, drinks, and entertainment are not included and are quoted separately. Any technical riders and sound technicians are quoted separately.
  • Links to our menus are on www.hughs.co.za
  • Yes. External caterers are welcome to use our fully equipped kitchen. They will need to provide proof of insurance and liability cover prior to the event.
  • We do not have in-house musicians, but we can connect you with our artist booker who handles all our regular performers.
  • Our standard offering includes an in-house PA system. Screens and projection equipment are not part of the venue's standard offering — these would need to be sourced and supplied by you or your AV supplier. We do have a designated screen position at the back of the stage; site visits are recommended to determine your placement.
  • Yes. The venue is available for shoots. Please contact us for rates and availability.
  • Absolutely. We welcome site visits. Please get in touch and we'll arrange a suitable time.
  • We host private dinners, product and media launches, film and series screenings, corporate events, conferences, birthday celebrations, brand activations, and our popular weekly jazz evenings.

Terms & Conditions

Suppliers

*Note all suppliers are responsible for all their equipment - they need to arrive fully equipped with all the tools needed to complete their tasks. Play Braamfontein will not be responsible for supplying any ladders, extension cords, generators, tools etc.

Cancellation

If the event is cancelled within 10 days of the event, Play Braamfontein is entitled to:

  • 50% of the booking fee

If the event is cancelled within 7 days of the event, Play Braamfontein is entitled to:

  • 100% of the booking fee

Payment

To secure your booking, a deposit of 50% needs to be paid. Your booking will be held for 48 hours and will be booked once proof of payment of the deposit has been received.

Full payment needs to be paid 10 working days before the event. No one will be allowed to enter the space until the full amount has been paid.

Damage/Loss

Play Braamfontein shall not be held liable for any loss or damage to personal belongings or property during events hosted at our venue spaces. We encourage guests to take necessary precautions and secure their possessions accordingly.
