THE STORY
“I always said that the Neighbourgoods market is like looking into a periscope of the optimal utopian South African future – where every nationality, race, gender and age harmoniously rub shoulders with one another and are inspired by everything around them. It’s the only place in South Africa where you get the most authentic mix of people in such massive volumes – so it’s no surprise it’s now one of Joburg’s biggest tourist destinations.”
The Neighbourgoods market is the Johannesburg edition of the original Cape Town market at the Biscuit Mill selling farm-fresh foods and specialty goods, from local farmers and artisan producers to gourmet cooks and bespoke fashion and jewelry designers. It now attracts about 4500 people every Saturday from all walks of life – that’s well over a million people since 2011!
The market runs every Saturday from 9am-3pm. Special events also take place, such as the Gin Festival, Redbull culture week and many, many others. Secure parking is located near 73 Juta Street on the corner of Juta and Melle Streets – and is also Handicap Accessible.
